Hitchhicker's Guide to the Galaxy was an absolute blast. Great humor, really well translated to the screen. They put in and left out just enough to really make it stand on it's own. It was a truely splendid way to spend my Birthday. (more after the break)
It's the first movie in a long time that I wanted to go see it again right after it ended. It was so jam packed with humor and little gems that I'm sure I missed a bunch (being drunk might have had something to do with it as well). There was really something for everyone; from the freak that's been living under a rock and has no idea what the Guide is, to die hard fans. Some of the new bits were great, and made up quite nicely for all the things I wish were left in from the books.
The casting was totally on point with near perfect performances from everyone. Sam Rockwell's Zaphod could have been a little more over the top, but Alan Rickman's Marvin almost made up for it. Even though he looked more like a trendy Japanese girl's key chain than a paranoid android. The standout performance however was from Zooey Deschanel, simply because she's totally hot.
The costumes were very true to the tone of the books, and the creatures by Jim Henson's Creature Shop were absolutely hilarious, I nearly fell out of my seat almost everytime a Vogon was on screen. Good stuff.
Finally the animations done for the Guide entries were so cool they almost warrant the ticket price themselves. Well maybe if you threw in the hilarious opening "song and dance."
Bottom line: I'd see it again and again.
