So as one of my friends is proclaiming the virtues of volunteering for a radio station. I'll tell you about the great show I heard on Indie 103.1, Clear Channels attempt at trying to reach the people that hate commercial radio. That quite frankly is really working. . .
Rob Zombie played what I must say was one of the coolest and most interesting 2 hours of radio I've heard in a long time. Spanning a whole musical spectrum, from electronica to 50s rock, to late 70s punk it was a joy. I was almost half way to getting out my wallet to give a donation, when one of the commerical breaks started. I have to say between his show, Steve Jones, the Crystal Method and now the Mighty Morning Show they've got themselves a really great lineup.
As far as the whole "Supporting Evil Corporations" thing, well there is still that problem, and I really do feel pretty bad. . . but isn't it more the fault of the FCC? They are just doing what they are, as a corporation designed to do: make as much money as possible. It's not their job to worry about media diversity, it's the Federal Governments, and ours. Time to look up some foundations that are working for more media diversity. . .
I'll still listen to NPR for my news, but not even on kcrw anymore, but I seam to gravitate toward KPCC's (89.3) shows more often anyway, and really it looks like it'll be giving them my money this year. . .
Frankly I'm totally fed up with the music on KCRW. Nick Harcourt has always bored me completely, and more and more even Jason Bently's picks are really tiresome and dreary. It's like the entire music department there has a policy to play music that is slow, boring, and always as unexciting as possible. I suppose they have to design their play lists for the over 40 crowd who has deep enough pockets to really shell out the $365 donations. Heh, I'm sure I'll still give them some money, since I do take advantage of their ticket giveaways quite often, and have even used my fringe benefits card on occasion.
I wish we had some good Pirate radio in south LA, Long Beach. I tried Satellite radio and was totally unimpressed. Well that was a rant now wasn't it. . .
